Charlie was moved from Longleat to the Newquay Zoo in September of 2009. On 13 March 2012, the Newquay Zoo blog  published:

Staff at Newquay Zoo are sad to confirm that Charlie, the much beloved African lion, has passed away. Animal Collection Manager John Meek said; ‘‘Charlie joined us in 2009 from Longleat Safari Park, where he had spent many years as head of a pride. We offered him a place to retire, by the sea, with his sister Connie. He has spent the last three years with us as a healthy and happy lion – however recently his health took a turn for the worst. He had a heart condition, amongst other medical complications, and on the advice of our trusted vet we made the difficult decision to euthanise him before his pain got too great.’’
